Why We Shoot Boudoir

Ever since The Adore Girls first opened their studio doors in Nashville, TN, in 2012, they have only specialized in one specific type of photography - Boudoir! Their passion for shooting boudoir runs deep, and in today’s blog, The Adore Girls’ all-female photography team (consisting of Jamie Pfister and Lindsey Gregory who are sisters) want to share with you their own personal “why’s.”

Jamie Pfister, Owner & Photographer

“I have been a Boudoir Photographer for 11 years now, and I have loved every single moment of it. One of my very first clients sealed the deal for me many years ago. We had just taken a couple of shots when I turned the camera around to show her what I was getting. She looked at the camera and then looked up at me with tears in her eyes and said, “I now know why my husband tells me I’m beautiful.” Needless to say, I then had tears in my eyes, and I knew in that moment I was doing what I was supposed to be doing.

Boudoir to me is not just taking beautiful images of women, it’s about showing them that they truly are beautiful and each is a unique work of art. In the world we live in today, it’s so easy to get caught up in “what we are supposed to look like, what size what we are supposed to be,” etc. Boudoir allows me to show women that they are truly beautiful just the way they are. It also gives them permission to be and FEEL sexy, which is also weirdly looked down upon in today’s society if you are not the “right” size. I want to prove to every woman out there that there is no “perfect” or “right” size. Every size, every shape, every WOMAN is beautiful, and they deserve to see themselves as such. I love that what I do allows women and, in a sense, gives them permission to feel beautiful and sexy just the way they are. I feel truly fortunate to get to do what I love every single day. Each woman that walks through our studio has a unique story and is on their own journey, and I feel honored to be a part of that.”

Lindsey Gregory - Photographer & Social Media (and Little Sister)

“For me, being a feminist and a creative basically equates to having my dream job as a full time boudoir photographer. The feminist in me finds one side of my job incredibly satisfying because of the empowerment our Adore Girls gain through their photo shoots. It feels like I'm making a difference, one Adore Girl at a time, by helping women feel secure and confident in the skin they are in. I'm a strong advocate for embracing and being proud of the heart, mind and body that we are born into. This entire process is more than just seeing a pretty picture of yourself. Most women have to be brave just to book a session, and that is not your body making that decision, that is your heart and your mind. Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone takes strength. (I always remind myself of this when a new Adore Girl walks through our door.) Though we are photographing your body, it's your heart and your mind that brings you to our studio, and it's your heart and your mind that will change in a positive way throughout the entire experience. To me, this positive change is at the core of what we do. Sure, we are great photographers - we know what we are doing with posing, lighting, wardrobe styling, and using our equipment - but being a boudoir photographer is ultimately about creating a culture that encourages women to support and uplift other women. And, at the risk of sounding super cliche, the small part I get to play in helping a woman hold her head higher, to feel good about herself, to compare herself less to other women, and to channel her sexuality, whether it be for the first time or if perhaps it has been lost over the years, is, to me, what it means to be a boudoir photographer.

The other side of my job is creative. Being a creative person means, quite literally, that I crave creativity. It's something I cannot turn off. I compare craving creativity to hunger pangs; although, it's not my stomach telling me something, it's my mind, and I guess my heart a little, too. It's the constant urge or need to create something to feel a sort of satisfaction. Every session, every new set design and every time I sit down to edit images I'm satisfying my creativity. To get paid to do this is every creative person's dream job. I get to create art that is so personally fulfilling, and in the end it also makes someone else feel emotion, too. That is what art is supposed to do, right? I love to shoot lots of different genres of photography because I'm creating something no matter what I am shooting, but boudoir creates a ripple effect more than any other type of photography, in my opinion. Selfishly, I'd say that ripple effect starts with me because I want to create art, but the images I get to create with an Adore Girl then affects her, not just in the shoot when she's feeling beautiful and having a good time, but also when she sees her final images, and every day after her image debut when she looks back at her images for the years that follow. I also believe that ripple effect continues and affects everyone in her life that gets to experience the side of her that now feels more confident, beautiful, sexy and (dare I say it again) EMPOWERED. So yeah, when we say, ‘It's more than just a photoshoot, it's an experience,’ I truly believe it. I'm grateful every day for the opportunity to be a boudoir photographer because my ‘creative fix’ actually serves more than just satisfying my own creative craving, it serves women by creating self-esteem and confidence in a world that so often tells us we should feel the opposite. I'm proud of the community of women that we have brought together via our studio and the culture we have created in our groups on social media that have embraced and run with the idea of encouraging, inspiring and uplifting other women, rather than tearing each other down or judging another woman's choice to be a sexual and feminine being. So, in the words of one of our past clients, I will end with this, ‘The world needs more Adore Girls.’”
