What to Do If You Get Your Period

So, you’ve had a boudoir session scheduled for some time, and the big day is finally just around the corner! You’re getting so excited and doing all you can to prepare for your boudoir photo shoot when, suddenly, it hits you... “Um…when is my period supposed to start?” You immediately check the calendar and, sure enough… “Damn it! Talk about terrible timing!”

This scenario has happened to more of our clients than we can count at this point, and while we totally agree that it does kind of suck to get your period right before your session (when has getting your period ever NOT sucked?), having an ill-timed menstrual cycle should NOT prevent you from having an amazing boudoir experience! In fact, The Adore Girls’ boudoir photography team in Nashville, TN, are happy to share some advice about what to do if you get your period right before your boudoir photo session.

“Should I reschedule my boudoir photo shoot appointment if I’m going to be on my period?”

We understand why you might automatically assume that you need to reschedule your boudoir session to a time when you won’t be on your period. However, doing so may not only cost you money in the form of a rescheduling fee (our Rescheduling clause can be found in your Client Agreement), but there are actually several reasons, which we are about to explain in detail, why it is completely unnecessary to change your appointment, provided you are able to wear a tampon or menstrual cup for the duration of your boudoir photo shoot.

“How can I possibly look sexy in my boudoir photos when having my period makes me feel so ‘blah?’”

The Adore Girls’ studio has an all-female staff of professional boudoir photographers, so we totally get this concern. It is very common for women to give their inner seductresses the week off while Aunt Flo is in town. However, just because you’ve never gone above and beyond before to feel and look sexy during your period doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible. In fact, it is VERY possible, and we have a Gallery full of gorgeous Adore Girls to prove it! Can YOU tell which women in our portfolio were on their periods during their boudoir sessions? Do any of them look like they feel “blah” to you? Absolutely not! And neither will you, because having a boudoir session is truly a FUN and amazing experience, no matter what time of the month you do it! The key is to simply trust in the process and allow our experienced and supremely talented team of artists take care of the rest. (Popping a couple of aspirin or ibuprofen right before your appointment might not hurt, either, though. Just sayin’.)

“What if I’m bloated or my skin breaks out before my boudoir session?”

While bloating and break-outs do sometimes occur during woman’s period, rest assured that The Adore Girls’ team will not allow either of these temporary, yet unfortunate, menstrual side effects affect your boudoir photos. Not only are our professional hair & makeup artists extremely talented at what they do, but our photographers are also experts when it comes to boudoir wardrobe styling, lighting, angles, and posing to help you look your absolute best in your photos. In addition, The Adore Girls do not outsource our photo editing. Rather, the photographer who photographs your session will also personally edit your boudoir photos, keeping in mind any areas of concern you may have expressed during your photo shoot. In other words, there really is no need to worry or be concerned about bloating or having a couple of pimples on the day of your boudoir shoot, because those, along with any other temporary skin issues (such as accidental bruises or scrapes), will not be visible in your gorgeous, professionally edited boudoir photos.

“What if there’s an accident, like my tampon string shows or, worse, I have a leak during my boudoir shoot? I’ll be mortified!”

The biggest things to keep in mind are that, again, The Adore Girls’ staff is 100% female, and we’ve photographed more than 2300 women over the past ten years. So, the last thing you need to worry about is being mortified in front of any of us, especially when it comes to period-related issues or accidents during your boudoir session. Not only have we all experienced them ourselves at one time or another, but we’ve probably photographed them, too. There have, indeed, been times when we’ve noticed a tampon string or a visible period stain in a client’s underwear, either during the photo shoot or afterwards while editing her photos. In the case of the latter, we are perfectly capable of editing those types of things out. However, if the issue is noticed by the boudoir photographer during the photo session, she will either adjust the client’s poses so that it is no longer visible, or simply let her client know what is being seen so that the client can make any necessary adjustments, if needed. In most cases, though, our clients never even have an opportunity to feel embarrassed because they are rarely made aware that such things were seen by us.

With all of that being said, it is always a good idea to bring an extra pair or two of panties, as well as tampons, if you know you’re going to be on your period the day of your boudoir session, just in case a change does become necessary. The important thing to remember is that if a period-related accident happens during your boudoir photoshoot, it is not an uncommon occurrence and it is absolutely no big deal to us.

To summarize, we know it can be a huge bummer to find out that you’re going to be on your period the same day as your scheduled boudoir session, but for all the reasons discussed above, we hope we have reassured you that there is absolutely no need to reschedule your appointment, and that having your period will not affect your boudoir photos in any way.

NOW is the best time to become an Adore Girl. Period!
